Held in partnership with The North Face as part of The North Face Explore Fund, and supported by Auscope, this workshop will guide you through the fundamentals of outdoor climbing while providing context to the deep history that exists within the very rocks we climb. With an emphasis on mindful movement and environmental stewardship, participants will walk away from this experience more confident in their climbing skills and with a greater appreciation for the landscape (and maybe a few hand blisters).
A portion of ticket proceeds will be donated to the Traditional Owners of the land on which this event is held (Wadawurrung Aboriginal Corporation).

Led by geologists, Jo Condon and Philomena Manifold, and climbing instructors, Melissa Edwards and Ben Sheppard, together we will learn about and climb upon the rocks of Werribee Gorge on Wadawurrung Country. Throughout this experience, participants will be guided through the geological history and significance of the area, the importance of climbing stewardship, and the practice of outdoor climbing.
The morning will start with a short hike through the state park. When we arrive at the crag, Jo and Philomena will speak about the geological story of Werribee Gorge and lead a field exercise. Once we’re well-acquainted with the rocks, Melissa and Ben will guide us through the fundamentals of climbing along with the importance of respectful recreation in the outdoors. This is a beginner friendly event, we’ll be climbing top rope and no prior experience is required.
All climbing gear will be provided. We’ll also have some coffee and snacks to share, but as the workshop will span the duration of the day, we advise packing lunch and some extra snacks.
This event is made possible by The North Face Explore Fund and supported by Auscope, Australia’s geoscience research facility.

Jo Condon (she/her) is a geologist, designer and research communicator. Jo grew up on Gunditjmara Country, where her curiosity for the natural world was born. Over the course of her career, she’s walked through Adnyamathanha Country collecting rock chip samples, ridden chair lifts into the South African earth to view precious mineral seams, and climbed volcanoes in Iceland to wonder at multi-scale Earth processes. Today, Jo’s continued passion for geology, design, science education and engagement is exemplified in her role as Director of Strategic Engagement at AuScope, Australia’s provider of geoscience research laboratories, instruments, data, software and expertise.
Philomena Manifold (she/her) is a writer, artist, geologist and explorer of wild places. Her work focuses on the meeting point between science and art. She explores geological narratives through various artistic mediums such as photography, poetry, book and printmaking, sculpture, and dance. Discover her work here, including her book Written in Stone: reading the rocks of the Great Ocean Road. Her passion is to weave together design, creativity, science communication and geology. She is also a novice rock climber and reasonable boulderer.
