AUSTRALIAN
WILDFLOWERS
For thousands of years, Aboriginal communities have observed their own seasonal calendars. As Australia’s First People and first scientists, these seasons were formed in line with an intricate understanding of the environment, connection to Country and traditional ecological knowledge, unlike the Western four-season calendar commonly used today.
The Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung Peoples of Gariwerd (Grampians) have six seasons. According to this calendar, the time of year which we know as spring, is known as Petyan or the season of wildflowers.
